What Music Vids Have Taught Us About Life

Started at the bottom, now we’re here!

5 life lessons we learned from music videos

Here at Flying Fish HQ, we like to keep the music channels on in the background, because, #realtalk – we need as many distractions from work as possible. Can we get a “hell yeah”?

While debating the eternal significance of Kendrick Lamar’s “King Kunta”, it dawned on us that there’s some hectic knowledge to be gained from music vids if only you look beyond the champagne-poppin’ and twerking. We’re always for looking beyond the ordinary here at Flying Fish.

That’s why we’ve compiled this list of life lessons courtesy of Drake, and even your boy, AKA.

Drake – Started From The Bottom

Fly Life Lesson #1: all white everything is always a good idea. Even in a droptop in the snow. Especially in a droptop in the snow.

And when we say “good idea” we mean, “look like you’re deep in those dollars”. While Drake’s style choices are often questionable (see: bad), we admire his dedication to the adage: “Dress for the retirement you want, not the career you have.”

#EvenMoreFlavour: Drake’s “Know Yourself” taught us that “woes” aren’t anything to get emo about.

In an interview with Noisey, he said:

“Woe is my crew. It stands for ‘working on excellence’. It’s just my whole brand and my whole movement and my way of life for everyone. I want everyone to work on excellence. So, all my friends are my Woes and I feel anybody working on excellence in life is a Woe in life as well.”

AKA ft. Burna Boy, Da L.E.S., JR – All Eyes on Me

Fly Life Lesson #2: when it comes to pool parties, think Chris Brown.

While ladies are encouraged to embrace the “less is more approach” to swagoo, dudes need only study Breezy if they wanna score in the fashion dept. at the next pool party.

#EvenMoreFlavour: AKA’s diss track taught us that you can break the Internet with #Composure.

Why you gassing, dawg?

Sam Smith – I’m Not The Only One

Fly Life Lesson #3: if you love someone, then they’re probably cheating on you. Sorry, bruh.

Study the history of music videos and soon you’ll discover a disturbing pattern. Nah, it’s got nothing to do with the Illuminati, fam. Instead, it has everything to do with how real L-O-V-E means real heartbreak ’cause in the censored words of Chris Brown: “These chicks ain’t loyal.”

#EvenMoreFlavour: for a young throwback, check out the original “Bye Felicia” music video from Destiny’s Child.

Kid X Ft. Moozlie – Se7en

Fly Life Lesson #4: the 9-5 game is for fools.

Don’t get it twisted. It’s all good to suit up and earn that paper, but if you’re not bumming off work for a young party sitch’ then you’re doing it wrong.

Jidenna ft. Kendrick Lamar – Classic Man

Fly Life Lesson #5: it might seem hella cheesy, but embrace your natural steez and you’ll win at life (having homies like K.Dot and Janelle Monae sure does help though).

For proof, examine Jidenna’s red-hair-don’t-care confidence and dandy apparel.
