Hit “play”, refresh your day

Who doesn’t love a 9am meeting on a Monday? Probably the guy who’s still slapping the snooze button even though it’s 8.55am. Oh yes, and just about everyone else too. You could’ve had a weekend worthy of Riky Rick, but if you’re not Riky Rick, you still have to get on with the boring stuff like traffic, adulting and being 24th-of-the-month broke when it’s still only the 5th.

For Flying Fish, the ‘boring stuff’ only inspires us to add even more flavour, keeping a constant eye out for a refreshing take on the mundane.

Basically, your next great idea might be hiding behind some “boring stuff” – all you gotta do is find your fly perspective, blast some bangin’ tunes and let your own unique flavour guide you.

“Inspiration in a traffic jam?” you ask. You got it, as long as you’ve got the right music... But we know that’s easier said than done, so we got resident hip-hop head Ndu Donsa, aka @Skinnygenes_TV to create a playlist to inspire, even on a Monday morning at 8.55am.

Kid X - Laundry Day Fresh

Top reason to give it a listen -> If house music is your flavour then consider this your official summer anthem.

Kid X’s track is as fresh and clean as you’d expect. On this record, he’s telling all of us to take it easy, relaaaaaax and keep it fresh, of course.

Psst! If you’re a serious fan of the Kid, remember 13 October is his birthday!

If you like this, then -> take that relaxation up a notch. Close your eyes and imagine you’re back at that rooftop party that you rocked last Saturday.

UNBELIEVABLE - Palm Tree Paradise

Top reason to give it a listen -> The lyrics are hella catchy and the video is dope!

If you’re from Durban, you gonna love this one. If you don’t know already, UNBELIEVABLE is a rap crew from Dubane and I really like the energy of this record.

If you like this, then -> Pump it up a little louder and hit that repeat button.

Top lyrics - > I like how she's always on point with her attire. Like how she's always saying that I'm on fire. I like how she's driving me crazy, she must be my ride or die.

Da L.E.S feat. Riky Rick - Summer Time

Top reason to give it a listen -> C’mon it’s the North God and King Kotini. But for real, these two rappers go way back, and they’ve paired up to create this banger.

Let me put it this way: Summer Time by Riky Rick and Da L.E.S is all about the laid-back feel. Y’know, the nights that you wish would never end.

Word to North God and King Kotini for this fly summertime track.

If you like this, then -> Blast it while you’re powering through your morning workout.

Anatii - Hours

Top reason to give it a listen -> this song 100% guarantees good vibes. You simply *cannot* be in a bad mood when you listen to this track.

Coming in at number four is Hours from Anatii taken off his ARTIIFACT album, which delivered a refreshing sound to SA hip-hop.

Did you know? Artiifact was originally titled: Electronic Bushman.

If you like this, then -> Turn it up and conquer the twilight zone between 4 and 5 on a Friday.

Burna Boy - Pree Me

Top reason to give it a listen -> This track is a distinct departure from Burna Boy’s usual upbeat sound, but even when he’s bringing the feels, he manages to create a hot dance track.

We all know that the Caribbean sound is the new flavour in hip-hop so you gotta pump this track.

If you like this, then -> Push play and sing along like you know you wanna. Check the lyrics here.

Roy Wood$ - Gwan Big Up Urself

Top reason to give it a listen -> Described as “island-tinged” this dancehall-style track perfectly captures the current flavour in hip-hop right now.

Roy Woods is the freshest artist on the block and is currently signed to Drake’s OVO label. Watch out for this one!

When asked about his musical influences in this interview, the 20-year-old Toronto rapper listed Nelly, Usher, Michael Jackson, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Drake, Wiz Khalifa and PARTYNEXTDOOR.

If you like this, then -> You heard the man, Gwan Big Up Urself!
